I have a new student, Harry, in my upper level middle school class. This past week, he's been extremely sweet and really patient, as I got more than a little angry at a couple of the other boys in his class recently. Choi balled out the whole class basically for me in Corean after Wednesday's class when i spent more time getting them to shut up than teaching. With that known, Friday's class was really rather pleasant. They were all on their best behavior and we got a lot accomplished. We were practicing the past tense of regular verbs and hearing the difference in how they sound. For those that are sitting there reading this with muffled brows wondering what I mean, I'm talking about he difference (listening) between watched (t), planted (id), and played (d). Because they were all focused and listening, they really were doing well and were able to hear and distinguish most of the time, which verb sounded like what in the past. From there I decided to see how well they could use the verbs, so I asked them to write some sentences, of their choice for at least 5 of the verbs we'd been studying. They all set about making sentences and I was starting to float around to look at them. I'd just like to take a min. to quote one of Harry's sentences. Mind you, he was trying. They were supposed to use the past tense of the verbs.
"We're baked."
I saw it and busted out laughing. I couldn't help it. I was left the rest of the classperiod in stitches and could hardly stop myself from giggling every two seconds at the thought of this inoccent kid having no idea what he'd written. I had to try and pass it off as nothing to the others too. I couldn't very well explain it to them all....
